It takes a while, you know?
I spent the majority of the afternoon today quietly reading on the couch and I still don’t feel… Um, hmm…
Actually, no. No I didn’t.
In reality I probably spent a total of about 90 minutes reading on the couch.
Because during that time I felt the unshakable need to get up and carry all the firewood from the porch into the house, then replace those stacks from the the pile that’s still hanging out in the yard.
Then I got back up after a short while to do a chicky wellness check, and spent time making noises to dissuade predators and disseminating separate but equal amounts of mealworms to our two adversarial factions of hens who refuse to occupy the same area of the yard at the same time.
Which in turn reminded me that I needed to sweep up the last of the wood shavings in the mudroom. And then I noticed all the chicky dust on the counter in there that needed to be wiped down.
Also there was the trash and recycling that staunchly refuses to take itself out to the cans.
Those damn framed pictures still need to be hung too.
And that gigantic inflatable that had been monopolizing 25% of the square footage in Daphne’s bedroom since Christmas still needed to be dealt with…

I think I’m struggling with the whole resting thing during my few days off. (Probably out of fear of how difficult it is for me to get things throttled back up to functional speeds again if I do slow down.)
Anyway, once Daphne got home we continued to work on getting her acclimated to putting on her Halloween costume ahead of wearing it to school tomorrow, which hasn’t been easy…
Oh, right. Her costume.
Daphne told us that she wanted to be a squid for Halloween this year, which I found to be an awesome idea. And so we set about ordering her the below costume from Amazon.

As you can see, this is a single contiguous piece of foam/polyester. And after a dozen attempts at putting it on we found there to be a zero chance of that whole head hole thing happening. We’d get the costume down about as far as her nose before she started flailing around and ducked out of the whole business.
Disheartened, I was resigned to putting her back into the elephant PJs that served as her costume last year. That is, until it dawned on me that I wouldn’t be out anything of value if I made some Daphne-friendly alterations to the squid. Worst case scenario I’d just be carving up something that I was going to throw away anyway.
So I cut it along the seams in several places, thus removing the betentacled cephalopod bodice bit from the foam squiddy-hat thing, removing the long sleeves, as well as cutting the chinstrap apart.
And…

I think she looks awesome.
We’ll get more pictures tomorrow, I’m sure.
