A Mile from the Sun

Six months of winter and all it took was a few days of above average temps before we started complaining about how hot it is…

Hot wings.

And if we’re being entirely honest, it just ain’t all that hot. I mean, the “feels like” is in the mid 80’s…

Empirically speaking, that’s just not all that unpleasant. Particularly if you factor in where we came from 3 years ago…

Memorial Day in Houston is gonna be brutal this year.

Our old Cross Creek Ranch neighbors would probably be sporting hoodies and jeans up here right now. Although…maybe they wouldn’t? Hard to say. We never really knew our old neighbors all that well.
And it wasn’t from a lack of trying. In fact I went to the majority of the block parties (to which we were invited). I think we just had irreconcilable differences on the importance of sartorial/musical conformity, the social imperative of spotlessly washed and waxed pickup trucks sitting in the driveway, and the abjectly confusing need to watch college football in a 2-car garage with the doors open.

That last one, man… It always got me.

Instead of watching said football game somewhere within the luxurious confines of the air-conditioned 3,500 sq. feet of home that you pay $3,500 a month to live within, instead you choose to stand in a stuffy garage, drinking Shiner Bock and sweating like a drunken plow horse in Malaysia.

It’s a ubiquitous facet of Texas life that always confused the hell out of me.

Anyway, back to New England.

This being a 200-year-old farmhouse, we have no central A/C. And because it’s in northern Vermont, we also have a metal roof. So when the weather starts to heat up, it can get rather warm in here. The only cooling system we have is this little guy, who lives in my office window for about 4-5 months a year:

Cranking as we speak

There’s also a box fan pointing from my office door to the living room, which helps the cool air find its way into that room too. So we at least have a couple areas in the summer that are in the 70’s.

Jen and Daph will often start the night downstairs on the couch if the upstairs is too hot to sleep. Speaking of which, let’s run up and check the upstairs window fan and see how we’re doing up there…

88? Yeesh. Tonight could definitely be one of those “sleep downstairs” nights.

Even our poor chickens are sweltering out there.

“Hey, what’s with da temps? I wanna talk to the super.”

But it’s been great for starting off the growing season. The newly planted seedlings in the raised beds are super happy and the lilac bush is absolutely loving life right now.

Started really blooming today.

And fortunately it’s rare that these temperatures ever last all that long. As a matter of fact, the high temp tomorrow is 76. And that’s the hottest it will get for the remainder of May.

Amusing reminder when, exactly six weeks ago today, the view from my office window looked like this:

Right now, I think I’ll take the heat.

Ask me again in September and I might be singing a different tune.
