Dagobah Revisited

I’m pretty sure I’ve mentioned, once or twice, that we lived in Houston, Texas before moving to northern Vermont. So we’re quite well-versed in the whole (Heat + Humidity) * Concrete = Abject Misery meteorological formula.

Welcome! In Bear Creek, you are.

And because brutal Houston summers are but recent memories, it’s quite possible that we’re being rather cavalier about this whole VERMONT HEAT WAVE! thing that’s been in the news today.

Yes, I see! 95 whole degrees. That’s adorable.

That said, I do have a window A/C unit cranking next to me as I type this, so my office is rather comfortable despite the outdoor thermometer showing in the high 80’s.

This guy is putting in work today…

That little A/C unit was a VERY early purchase for our house. I’m talking like, “8 days after moving in” kinds of early. I mean, I didn’t exactly move up here because I adore spending time in the sweltering heat. A window unit fell squarely into the “rather have it and not need it…” camp.

Come to think of it, this will make the third summer that it’s been cranking along in there with absolutely no upkeep on my part, other than hurking it up into the window frame sometime in May.
That’s pretty impressive.
I don’t think a single year went by at our old house without some manner of air-conditioner issue(s). And the upstairs in that house was constantly hot in the summertime, no matter how much the A/C ran.
And run it did; our electricity bill was typically $400-$500 in the summers.

Speaking of upstairs, the one in this house is probably quite warm right now too. Let’s go see…

91°.

Yeah. That’s gonna be way too hot for sleeping up there tonight. I suppose it’s a good thing we have those Hest camping mattresses.
Our plan is to set them up on the floor of the living room, which stays quite cool since it’s right in the path of the A/C window unit, and just sleep downstairs for the next few days.

Dual duty for camping accoutrement. I love it.

And I’m guessing I’ll have much more to say about that little arrangement in tomorrow’s post…

See you then.
